Victor Victrola X motor springs

I just purchased the phono and when I tried to wind it up it would tension so far and then it would go sproing. If the video works on this forum you can hear it.

On taking then apart I found two different spring sizes in the canisters.

The one on the left is the one with the spring detached from the outer rivet. It has also had a repair carried out near the inner spring mount.

I am also having difficulty getting the spring end to move to the rivet or even get it raised enough to see if the pear shaped hole has been broken.

Should there be such a vast difference between the two spring sizes.

The can on the right has the gear attached to it

Any help in the direction to go would be appreciated.

Hello Gordon, and welcome to the APS Forum.

You're correct - - the spring barrel on the right has a mainspring which is too short; the consequence of an amateur "repair."  I'd recommend sending both spring barrels (with the mainsprings inside them) to one of the following repairmen, who can repair/replace as necessary and return them to you lubricated and ready to reinstall in your motor:

Ron Sitko
56 Church Hill Road.
Waterford NY 12188
Telephone (518) 371-8549
(No web address.  Call weeknights after 7pm Eastern.)
