Django Posted February 3, 2023 Posted February 3, 2023 (edited) The greatest trademark ever, (in my opinion). The first image is of my 3’ tall paper mache Nipper after restoration, (the last image is how he looked when I brought him home). These are all paper mache dogs. Next is an all original 14”, then an original 11”, followed by an, 18” glass eyed Nipper that is in need of restoration, a Boston Terrier that doesn’t really belong here, but he sits on top of my Brunswick and is pretty cool. The last is another restored 11” Nipper, (his front legs were broken off and he was a mess, but the price was right). I added one more of the finished 3’ Nipper. I did not enjoy that restoration, but I am glad that In did it. I hope that others will show off their Nippers. Edited February 3, 2023 by Django 1
alang Posted February 3, 2023 Posted February 3, 2023 Can’t really compete with these awesome dogs, but here are my Nippers. Andreas 1
melvind Posted February 4, 2023 Posted February 4, 2023 (edited) Here some of mine. There are others, but these are the ones I could get a quick picture of easily. As you will see, there was a time in my collecting years that I went a bit overboard collecting various nippers. Way overboard! I haven't bought any for some time, but it doesn't mean I won't again. Nipper Chalk Dogs (and a few others): My biggest: Some hidden amongst the machines: So many salt and peppers (Why did I get so many of these?): And just a few more: Glass Eyes: Edited February 4, 2023 by melvind 5
Henry Posted February 4, 2023 Posted February 4, 2023 What a surprise to see that "sator/arepo/tenet/opera/rotas" plaque! Now, who can tell us what it means, and why it's significant in the world of music? BTW, very nice Nipper collection!

Now, who can tell us what it means, and why it's significant in the world of music? BTW, very nice Nipper collection! I encountered the Sator Square for the first time in Siena, Italy in 2000. There is a left side entrance to the cathedral in Siena where one of the stones in the wall close to the door has the words carved in it. I later found the plaque I own in a gift shop there. I have read all kinds of things about it over the years, but I still don't really have any idea of its significance other than as a word puzzle which is what attracted me to it. If there is a link to the world of music I have no idea what that might be. I just like it. Here is a wikipedia link all about the Sator Square: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sator_Square Thanks for the kind comment on my Nippers!
Guest Posted February 4, 2023 Posted February 4, 2023 I have about 80 Nippers of various sizes but have never managed to get one of the 36" ones. Someday I hope to.
Henry Posted February 4, 2023 Posted February 4, 2023 (edited) The "Sator..." square is the same whether read forwards, backwards, sideways, or upside down. In addition, it is symmetrical about the middle (the "n" of "tenet") when read in any of those ways . The corollary to this in the music world was the technique often used by the 12-tone "row" composers such as Schönberg, Berg, and Webern (the so-called "Second Viennese School," a/k/a German Expressionism). The tone row can be manipulated by playing the sequence of tones forward, backward (retrograde), inverted, or retrograde of the inversion. Furthermore, a rough translation of the Latin corresponds to these manipulations: "The tailor Arepo keeps the work turning." Edited February 4, 2023 by Henry
RodPickett Posted February 5, 2023 Posted February 5, 2023 Here is an example of a rarer Nipper piece, intended for dealer display. More complete details are available in Nipper Collectables, VOL I, by Joan & Robin Rolfs, p 2-104 and VOL III, p256. Pictured also, the blue-lamp, is a Vicks VapORub Lamp, to help Nipper with his congestion. 4
melvind Posted February 5, 2023 Posted February 5, 2023 I thought I had included my picture of the Nipper advertising piece. I guess I missed it. But, here it is. If you notice in Rod's picture theher is a black arm support. Mine is missing that and the previous owner had a metal piece built that works, but isn't necessarily correct. But, one of my favorite pieces. It is all made of plaster and the machine and dog fit into slots in the plaster base. 3
KeithO Posted February 8, 2023 Posted February 8, 2023 I confess. I have a Nipper obsession. Here's most of them. What I don't have is an original big Nipper, both of mine are later plastic versions. 3
melvind Posted February 9, 2023 Posted February 9, 2023 Nice collection. You are as out of control as I am! 🤪
phonogfp Posted February 9, 2023 Posted February 9, 2023 I don't have a large collection of Nippers, but I have several "hidden" around the belfry so the grandkids can find them. Here are a few shots which obviously were not intended to show the Nippers very well...! George P. Find the Nipper... This one's pretty easy... Another easy one - just where you'd expect to find him... Not so easy... Maybe the hardest of all... Tricky... 2
CurtA Posted February 9, 2023 Posted February 9, 2023 I only have one... you guys have cornered the market. I've only been able to find two roosters... George, that K&R is a nice looking machine and it looks like you have a Rapke horn crane.
Django Posted July 27, 2023 Author Posted July 27, 2023 (edited) I bought a glass eye, 18” Nipper a few years ago. He was missing his ears and right foot, had two broken legs and quite a bit of road rash. I displayed him as he was because he still had a sweet face. I finally got around to him. The collar and mouth are original. Here are the before and after pictures. The third picture is of our Staffordshire Terrier rescue. She was kind enough to model for the ears. Django Posted August 1, 2023 Author Posted August 1, 2023 (edited) I saved my biggest challenge for last. The two models will be my recent restoration and this period picture of a glass eyed Nipper, (the last two pictures). If anyone is interested, I can document the attempted restoration here. melvind Posted August 1, 2023 Posted August 1, 2023 Now that's a challenge. Yes, please do show your progress. It is sad now and it would be fun to see it happy. 1
Tinfoilphono Posted August 1, 2023 Posted August 1, 2023 I second that! I'm very interested to see how you will bring this back to life. 1
phonogfp Posted August 1, 2023 Posted August 1, 2023 Me three! That sad torso deserves a resurrection. George P. 1
CurtA Posted August 3, 2023 Posted August 3, 2023 If anyone is interested, I can document the attempted restoration here. Yes, please... The obvious first step is to remove the previous botched repairs...
CurtA Posted August 4, 2023 Posted August 4, 2023 Pathe roosters have steel rods in their legs for support. Re-bar pieces might be good as a support for rebuilding the front legs... Just a thought...
Roaring20s Posted August 6, 2023 Posted August 6, 2023 I finally got him to sit still for a picture! James. 1
