"On This Day in Phonographic History..."

 

September 22, 1903: Eldridge Johnson was granted a U.S. patent (No.739,318) for “Sound Record.” This new process introduced the first use of a paper label on the recorded side of a disc. This was the “Improved Gramophone Record” which had appeared in the late summer of 1900.
