"On This Day in Phonographic History..."

 

April 21, 1899: Louis Valiquet filed for a U.S. patent for “Gramophone Motor.” Beginning in March/April 1900, this would be marketed as the Zonophone, the first successful competitor to Berliner and, for awhile, the only disc talking machine legally available in the U.S.

 

June 19, 1900: Louis Valiquet was granted a U.S. patent (No.651,904) for “Gramophone Motor.”
