"Phonospace" or "How Do You Display Your Collection?"

My take on space is what I call "The Collector's Conundrum", which is, if you have enough space, you'll run out of money, if you have enough money, you'll run out of space.

Love the 24 B horn Ken.  Is that on a Victor IV?

I get my 24 B back from John D tomorrow! I'm excited.  In the meantime I got a bunch of horns back from John last week and I want to show off his outstanding work

John Duffy sure does amazing work on horns.   You have some great looking machines.  Love the Johnson M.  One of the 24B horns is on a Victor VI and the extra one will go on the Auxetophone when I get it restored.

Johnson M is a favorite.  It runs really sweetly and I think was hardly used by its original and subsequent owners.  I was lucky to be offered an ERJ New Century reproducer for it a few months ago to replace Victor concert that was on it. I did rebuild the NC and I'm not sure I like the look of white gasket material but it does sound great for a machine built in 1901. The SN is 1257 so it's a reasonably early one. Only the leather elbow is a reproduction.  One day I may be lucky to find an ERJ concert for it.

 

The Auxetophone will look great with a 24 B.  I can't  wait to see the full restoration journey.  

Not sure which machine my 24 B is going on.  I like the black paper mache horn on my 6 and that doesn't  work on my other machines.  Perhaps the project plain case D I'm finishing up.

I found the 24B in the wild a couple of years back  and I was lucky no one noticed it on marketplace. It polished up nicely and then I sent to John to finish removing some of the bumps and bruises.  I'll post before and after pictures when I get it tomorrow.

As promised, the 24 B after John Duffy removed the last of the dents I didn't dare tackle.  Not bad for 120 year old horn! Also another photo of my collection.

I'm also a fan of the red "Tulip" horn, examples of red and blue "Lily" horns, and the Yankee Prince!  Interesting collection!  Thanks for posting - -

Thank you George! I don't know if the Royal Grand came from the Smiths or not. I'm thinking perhaps not. There are actually 2 of the "Tulip" horns. The large one, and a small one that I didn't photograph well, so it's hard to spot. It's on a Standard X, photographed so you're looking straight into the horn. The "Lily" horns are a weakness of mine, but very hard to find with a decent finish. There is a very rare, smaller version, as well. I only know of one example and the guy who owns it knows of only 1 other.  Maybe one day...

Thank you! It's one of those things that I enjoy every time I look at it. I was very lucky to find it, and equally lucky for the HMV machine on top of it.

The best part of the piggy bank is what's written on its side. It's an advertising piece, (reproduction), from Fink's Overalls, a Detroit brand. They had, by far, my favorite slogan of all time.

Thanks Jerry - that's a beauty!  I've seen a couple of the "Tulip" horns mounted on those machines marked as "Union."  Probably a store brand.  Rare birds.
