Jennison Posted January 16 Posted January 16 Forgive me if this has been addressed elsewhere; I couldn't find anything. In the past, I followed the Compleat Talking Machine instructions on cleaning a black japanned Q bed plate with dish soap. That particular bed-plate was almost devoid of any original pin stripining or decals. I recently acquired a really nice 2nd model Q with 95% of the bed-plate pin striping and decals still present, but it doesn't appear the machine has been cleaned at all. How should I go about cleaning the plate on this example? My apologies for the lack of photos; I don't have the machine with me at the moment. Thanks very much, Jennison
Fran604g Posted January 18 Posted January 18 (edited) Many of us in the hobby use non-pumice machanics hand cleaner, such as "Goop". I apply a liberal amount and let it stand for a few minutes, then remove it with a soft cotton cloth rag. As with any process, test it first on an inconspicuous place just to be sure no damage is occurring. I've also discovered that the hand cleaner can soften the finish or shellac used on cases, so after cleaning I allow the surfaces affected to dry and harden for a few hours, followed by buffing or if you wish, polishing with wood furniture paste wax. Others will likely (hopefully) chime in with their own techniques. Best, Fran Edited January 18 by Fran604g
