Unusual Victor Type R? HMV variant

Hi all,

 

Recently came into possession of a Victor Type R (Royal), serial number 10971. Although this machine is far from perfect, it does run strong and has a nicely intact Exhibition Jr. Reproducer and original platter felt.

 

My question is, has anyone ever seen one with an HMV logo decal on the side of the cabinet? It also leaves me curious as to how it made it back here to the states. The decal is foil base and shows no film, so I believe it is original.

That's not a UK HMV decal, but a short-lived American marking.  We showed an early Victor I (derived from R parts) with this decal on page 80 of Discovering Antique Phonographs.  I've seen several oak and poplar Victor record boxes with these decals on their lids.  Having one on a Royal is cool - congratulations!

Thank you for the quick response, George. Interesting! That explains why searches for an HMV Type R came up zilch. Some of the hardware and the bell of the horn got repainted in black at some point. I'm thankful that whoever had possessed this never attempted to strip and refinish it. Thank God.
