nippers_lounge Posted March 30 Posted March 30 I just bought a nice Edison Fireside for $199.00. Apart from needing a horn, reproducer and a crank. I need a knob to switch between 2&4 minutes. Also, I feel like something is missing from the motor.
Andersun Posted March 30 Posted March 30 (edited) Your speed governor is missing.... Edited March 30 by Andersun Add pic 1
phonogfp Posted March 30 Posted March 30 In addition to missing the governor, you're missing the speed control. George P. 1
nippers_lounge Posted March 30 Author Posted March 30 I found a Governor on eBay, I just need to find a speed control. I also need to replace the spring for the speed control lever.
phonogfp Posted March 30 Posted March 30 The speed control may well be the same as used on the Standard. George P. 1
nippers_lounge Posted March 30 Author Posted March 30 (edited) That’s what I thought and I just found one on eBay. It’s also missing the screw for holding the reproducer. Which I found as well. It’s amazing how much was missing? Edited March 30 by nippers_lounge Added more info
phonogfp Posted March 30 Posted March 30 Of course I don't know who you're buying from on eBay, but you's possibly save money by dealing directly with a reputable parts supplier such as George Vollema or The Phonograph Shop. George Vollema: http://www.victroladoctor.com/ The Phonograph Shop https://www.facebook.com/ThePhonographShop/ www.thephonographshop.com brian@thephonographshop.com George P.
nippers_lounge Posted March 30 Author Posted March 30 Well, I don’t know if George is still in Florida, or if he is back in Michigan? Plus, I thought he was thinking about retiring? As for the Phonograph Shop, they don’t have the parts I need. The gentleman I did buy parts from on eBay. Deals in phonograph parts, and has a 100% feedback rating.
phonogfp Posted March 31 Posted March 31 My understanding is that George's daughter handles the parts business while he's away. I'm glad you found the parts you need. 1
nippers_lounge Posted March 31 Author Posted March 31 Oh? Okay! This machine has more missing parts than I expected? I was able too get a replacement gear cover from the phonograph shop.
Andersun Posted March 31 Posted March 31 Over all it looks like a nice machine especially the pinstripe. I bet that machine broke long time ago and was hardly used. Glad you are putting back together. 1
nippers_lounge Posted March 31 Author Posted March 31 Thank you! Most people wouldn’t bother with a broken machine, but I thought it should be fixed.
nippers_lounge Posted April 1 Author Posted April 1 Would a model K reproducer be a good fit for the Fireside? Because the model S would be too big to fit in the carriage arm.
phonogfp Posted April 1 Posted April 1 Either the Model K (as originally equipped) or the Model S will fit in the Fireside's carriage. George P.
nippers_lounge Posted April 2 Author Posted April 2 (edited) Thank you George! Now, I just need to clean the case. I’ve tried Goop, Water and Vinegar, water and soap and mineral spirits aka paint thinner, but nothing works? I don’t know if it’s grime or shellac. Edited April 2 by nippers_lounge Spell check 1
phonogfp Posted April 2 Posted April 2 The case looks as though it's been painted. If so, you'll need stripper. George P. 1
nippers_lounge Posted April 3 Author Posted April 3 Okay, so the Governor and, speed control screw arrived today, and they fit perfectly. Also, received a locking screw for a reproducer, that I need as well. Plus I was able to get a reproduction gear cover. I am fortunate that the screws to hold the cover in place were still intact. I’m still waiting for the winding crank to arrive. I also, need to find a reproducer for the machine. And this machine will be back together. I will have to do some cleaning and oiling. I also, need to get a new spring for the speed control arm, as the current one is stretched out. After all is said and done. I am going to keep this one, as it is a very unique machine.
nippers_lounge Posted April 4 Author Posted April 4 Update! I have bought a Model K reproducer and found a spring for the speed control.
nippers_lounge Posted April 5 Author Posted April 5 (edited) I got the motor to run, albeit very slowly. I oiled the gears, as well as use some WD-40. I removed the Governor, and the gears started to move. I need a new belt as well. Edited April 5 by nippers_lounge Rewrite post
nippers_lounge Posted April 5 Author Posted April 5 Turns out the belt was the real culprit. Once, I slipped the belt tensioner off, the motor started to run faster. 1
nippers_lounge Posted April 10 Author Posted April 10 (edited) New belt arrived, but couldn’t get it to stay on the Mandrel, which by the way I was able to move. I contacted George Valloma and he said it might be the pressure screw on the end of the mandrel. I was able to loosen it put some oil in and got it to work. 😀 Edited April 11 by nippers_lounge Changed reply 1
