Retrograde Posted November 24, 2024 Posted November 24, 2024 I'm making veneer repairs to an oak Edison C19 DD machine. I would like to know what type of finish is on it. Is it wax? Shellac? Varnish? Danish Oil? Armor-All? The color is the common golden oak (mission?), however the outside has turned to a reddish orange hue from exposure to sun and god know what type of furniture polish or smoke. -Don
phonogfp Posted November 24, 2024 Posted November 24, 2024 Mission or Fumed oak finishes used wax originally. Golden oak used either shellac or varnish (test a hidden area with denatured alcohol or lacquer thinner to determine which). You can get a good idea of what the original finish looked like by examining the inside of the lid and/or door. Good luck! George P. 1
Retrograde Posted November 26, 2024 Author Posted November 26, 2024 Tested two tiny areas on the back with some denatured alcohol. Appears to be shellac. The finish softened and then harden as the alcohol dried (i.e. re-amalgamation). One spot was inconclusive while the second spot worked better. 1
