xtal_01 Posted April 29, 2024 Posted April 29, 2024 Hey! I cleaned everything but the taper tube ... was afraid of hurting the finish. Can I use something like Brasso or ??? to clean the taper tube? I am not sure if the gold is paint or plating or lacquer or ? Thanks
phonogfp Posted April 29, 2024 Posted April 29, 2024 No - DO NOT USE BRASSO on gold plating. Ammonia will clean it without harming it. George P.

phonogfp Posted April 29, 2024 Posted April 29, 2024 Ammonia. I've also used silver polish, but with no better results than with ammonia. George P. 2

Ammonia it is then. Thanks so much!!!!!!!!!!! PS ... 8 hours to get 3 springs to all catch ... I think part of the problem was I was being very gentle trying not to bend them too much

Brasso contains abrasives; it will strip lacquer from brass instruments, and I have no doubt that it would quickly remove the gold plating from that beautiful taper tube on your L-door. I second the ammonia suggestion. 1
Valecnik Posted April 30, 2024 Posted April 30, 2024 Ditto on the ammonia recommendation. You don't need to rub it hard. Gently with a cotton cloth, cotton ball or swab and you'll have good results. 1
mattrx Posted May 14, 2024 Posted May 14, 2024 Early on, I made the mistake of using Brasso on a gold tone arm. It stripped the gold right off with very little effort. Never again, ammonia only. Matt
