tomb Posted July 6, 2020 Posted July 6, 2020 With the other discussion on square cases I decided to see what changes were made to the square case thru the years.. I dug up my well worn Martinolas spread sheet and checked the numbers. He has put a lot of time and effort into this valuable resource in a effort to assist Edison collectors. It is excellent information. I gleaned these serial numbers from the spread sheet and they are only approximate numbers and I am sure there will be changes in the future as more information becomes available These numbers show the modifications to the bed plate made by Edison over the years to improve it. They may assist in dating your phonograph but bear in mind owners made modifications and Edison also modified older phonographs. These are serial numbers :: 1. two clip case to four clip case aprox. 20000 2.four clip case to new case aprox. 43000-44000 3.ICS standard A new case aprox. 47000 4.ID patent date changed from 1893 to 1898 aprox 18000 5.ID patent date changed from 1898 to 1903 aprox 164000 6. one screw carriage reproducer clip to two screw clip aprox 1800 to 2000 7. no gear cover to gear cover 5000 to 6000 8. tension adjuster screws added aprox. 8000 9. serial numbers on straight edge added aprox. 12000-13000 10 Edison Bell standard square case production run for export fell in the ranges aprox 6000 thru 10400 not sure how many were produced at a time. I hope this helps in square box identification Tom B
