Victor Portable Phonograph? European?

Recommended Posts

I picked this up at an estate sale.  It worked there but when I got it home it would slow to a stop.  The reproducer says "Victrola No. 2".  When I opened the machine to get at the mechanism to clean and lube things the motor says "Thorens No. 224" Swiss made.  The governor is missing a spring and weight.  The governor adjusting lever has English and Italian writing.  The stylus arms are quite loose and the sound box might be a home made job stapled to the wooden base.  Can anyone identify this unit so I can get repair parts?  I have a feeling this thing was cobbled together from spare parts.  The governor springs are 2" long and 1/4" wide.  The governor weights have a flat top to them. Thanks in advance

This isn't a Victor product, the reproducer doesn't go with the machine.

As mentioned, the reproducer is not from this phonograph. That does not mean it can't work. In fact, it would be better quality than the correct one. Your phonograph is not cobbled together, it just wasn't made much better to begin with. They were cheaply made, in mass quantities. That doesn't mean you can't enjoy it and have fun with it, however. Search around inside the cabinet for the loose governor weight. It would help a lot if it were still there.

The governor weight and the broken piece of the spring is gone.  I disassembled the unit today, the sound box is a series of interlocking pieces of cardboard, which needs a little refurbishing.  The reproducer needs work too.  It fits loosely on the tonearm and falls off sometimes.  The set screws that should hold it firm don't do much.  I think I bought a piece of junk but I'll work with it and see how it turns out.

When you say "soundbox", what are you referring to?  Soundbox and reproducer are different terms that refer to the same thing.

By the way, the picture of Venice adds to the Italian ambience...

He's referring to the horn.
