Thanks everyone for your help. You were right about changing the needle. I had no idea.

Is there a rule of thumb for winding? Should it just be enough for half a record?

Do y'all have a resource for buying records?

Im into jazz, any resources for finding 78's?

Thank you

visit www.78rpm.com, Kurt Nauck always has jazz records in his auctions. Good for a start.. Watch the catalog in the Jazz/Dance Band sections, etc

Honestly,  depending upon where you live, a good way to start your 78 collection is to scour local record stores, flea markets, and thrift stores that buy and sell older stuff. Even in the record store that deals mainly in rock and hip hop 😖 they will sometimes have a stash of 78s in bargain bins or under the counter, especially if the place has been there for decades.

I asked once at a record store in Andersonville here in Chicago about 5 years ago. The cashier directed me behind the counter and it was literally stacked with 78s 2 feet high, 12 feet long! Needless to say, I was there for a good few hours rummaging through them. Mostly big band and 40s pop, but I found some gems and all for super cheap.

The thrill is in the hunt!

To add to Mr. Jive's recommendation, about three years ago, a couple of friends and I went to an established record store that deals in LPs, cassettes, 8-tracks, and CDs.  When we asked about 78s, we were directed to a shelf full of them.  We dug through and each of us made a little pile.  When we took them to the counter and asked how much we owed, the guy told us, "78s are free!"

We returned to the shelf and made slightly larger piles.

I seem to recall Nate made out pretty great! I browsed elsewhere and bought Rod Stewart's Every Picture Tells a Story that looked to be in great condition but sounds like crap when played.😕

I sure did Fran! Not everyday one finds a copy of the Charleston in a pile of free 78s. But come to think of it, that was probably my last great "in the wild" find. I only started collecting a decade ago, but I don't find 78s like I used to. I only very rarely see them pop up in antique stores now.
