Cabinfever Posted July 15, 2023 Posted July 15, 2023 (edited) I was very surprised when I pulled out what I thought was a broken motor of an upright oak Brunswick (no medallion, but by the single Ultona reproducer and single cabinet door, I guess it's a model 200). The crank handle would just spin, so I thought the spring was broken. Turns out, the crank was not engaging with the motor because it was spinning inside a stripped plastic part! I can turn the motor shaft with my hand to wind up the spring, and the turntable will turn, so the spring lives! My theory is that someone at some point in this Brunswick's history found a way to make a male-end crank (I'm assuming not the original Brunswick Model 200 crank) work with the male-end motor shaft. Does anyone have an idea what this plastic shaft connector is or if I can replace it? I assume it is nylon, but all my Google searches haven't turned up anything similar. I may not be using the right keywords. Failing that, any other potential solutions? Is finding the correct size of female crank an unlikely possibility? All leads appreciated! Cabinfever Posted July 20, 2023 Author Posted July 20, 2023 Tremendous luck for me last week -- I found a female end crank that fits this motor amongst a box of assorted gramophone parts being sold locally. While it's a bit short, it connects sufficiently with the motor shaft and still clears the cabinet wall for cranking purposes. 1
CurtA Posted July 22, 2023 Posted July 22, 2023 That plastic piece is a typical redneck repair... I'm surprised he didn't use duct tape... 1 1
MisterJive47 Posted August 4, 2023 Posted August 4, 2023 Yes, as CurtA said. Looks like nylon, which was yet to be invented by Dupont. Definitely a creative "aftermarket modification"
Cabinfever Posted August 5, 2023 Author Posted August 5, 2023 Removed the plastic part, have been keeping my eye on Craigslist and had some luck recently. I was able to source some parts locally, among them a crank that fits! 🙌 Suddenly, the Brunswick I bought originally only for storage purposes, with a teeny tiny chance of one day being fixed to play, has jumped into the "working" category! Still some tweaking to do, of course, but elated to be at this point! 1
