Our turntable slows then stops after the stylus gets placed on it.  What looks like a safety lever switches to off.  The turntable spins well before the stylus gets placed.  How can this be repaired?

To avoid guesswork, we need more information to intelligently answer your question.

Please post a picture of your playing compartment showing what everything looks like when the problem occurs.

As requested:  A photo of the turntable and stylus.  This sits in a standing console cabinet  about 4 1/2 feet high.  The spring crank is on the right side.

Has the motor been properly lubricated?

Have the mainsprings been fully wound?

Are you using a new needle?

Have you tried different records and had the same result?

Is the auto-stop engaging?  (The "safety lever" which switches to stop?)  If so, can you adjust it?

Here's one of the free articles on the APS website which may help:

The auto stop might be maladjusted.   Carefully lift he turn table off with the brake lever set so it allows for the turn table to rotate.  Then you and move the reproducer across the exposed brake and you can see where it engages.  If it requires adjustment, it should be simple to figure out what to do.  If you need more help, take more pictures and upload them here.
