AudioAntique Posted February 28, 2023 Posted February 28, 2023 We have lost another dear friend. Charley Hummel was a mentor to us in our early collecting days in the hobby. He was a cheerleader to all who wanted to learn about phonographs, ephemera, and phonograph advertising. He loved the advertising signs and visiting his home was a treat to view his amazing collection. He shared his knowledge and grand collection to us when we wrote books on Nipper and Phonograph toys and dolls. His collection is shared in the fabulous books by Tim Fabrizio and George Paul. The Edison National Historic Park and Menlo Park in New Jersey received his assistance and knowledge for their exhibits. He was humble regarding his collection and had a loving, warm, honest personality. Joan said he had the best hugs! We thank Charlie for the wonderful memories. Our deepest Sympathy to his family. 2
melvind Posted February 28, 2023 Posted February 28, 2023 I was simply shocked by the news when I saw it earlier this morning. I actually gasped out loud. He was so generous and full of fun and knowledge. He was working on deals and articles right until the end. I am still a bit in disbelief. This has been a year of losing phonograph friends and this one just makes me realize how much these folks gave to the hobby and what good friends they were. RIP Charley. 😢
Tinfoilphono Posted February 28, 2023 Posted February 28, 2023 A very sad day indeed. Charley was such a giant in this hobby. Always helpful, always smiling. I feel privileged to have known him for so long, but I will very much miss talking with him.
phonogfp Posted February 28, 2023 Posted February 28, 2023 Charley was indeed a giant who will long be remembered as a benefactor for many of us, and for the hobby at large.
Valecnik Posted March 1, 2023 Posted March 1, 2023 Sad news indeed. I've known Charlie since phonos were bought, sold, traded based on a few Polaroid photos sent via snail mail. Always so knowledgeable and willing to share with the "newbie" back then. In recent years my family always enjoyed talking with him at the Rudesheim shows in Germany, the last time last November. R.i.p Charlie.
melvind Posted March 3, 2023 Posted March 3, 2023 Here is the very moving obituary for Charley https://www.vandermay.com/obituary/21343
Fran604g Posted March 4, 2023 Posted March 4, 2023 My sincere condolences to Charley's loved ones - both his family and dear friends of which I'm sure he had too many to count. The world suffers from his leaving. 1
