Description

Here is a solid example of the classic "Eagle" Graphophone, which appeared in 1897 and was widely available over the next decade.  This particular Eagle is #130632, which reliably places it in the spring of 1898.  It is 100% complete, including the belt cover (often missing).  This is an early-production machine, featuring the 4-screw plates securing the spring barrel.  It never had a mandrel tag, as these did not appear on Eagles until approx. #145000.  The original small Eagle Reproducer was missing on this one, so a replica D2 reproducer has been supplied, which plays better than the original.  Upgrades to the superior D2 were common upon their introduction in 1904, and many earlier Eagles are found with them.

This particular Eagle was untouched when I acquired it, so it was completely disassembled, cleaned, lubricated, and reassembled.  The governor was thoroughly cleaned and the weights balanced.  This Eagle plays as well as any Eagle I've ever heard (better than most!).  This machine is a perfect means of playing brown wax cylinders (120-144 rpm), and it is also easily capable of playing 160 rpm moulded cylinder records.  The mainsprings have ample power to play a cylinder all the way through.

The original lid decal had suffered a significant scratch/gouge at some point, so it has been carefully retouched so as not to detract from the machine's otherwise unmolested condition.  You can see in the pictures that there are no chips in the veneer, no damage to the base corners, nor anything other than the honest wear of 122 years.

If you're looking for a talking machine from the 19th century that you can actually use; one that will safely play brown wax as well as post-1901 moulded cylinders, and won't break the bank, this little Eagle could be for you.

Shipping will be at actual cost via whatever method the buyer prefers.  I will be traveling between the Rochester NY area and Storrs CT sometime in July or August, and can deliver this Eagle anywhere along that route.  If there is a show at Wayne NJ this fall, I would be glad to deliver it there as well (or anywhere along the route).

If you have any questions or would like additional pictures, just let me know.  The first person to Post, PM, or email me the word "SOLD" will be the new owner.
