Description
The Fabulous Phonograph
By Roland Gelatt
The story of the gramophone from tin foil to stereo.
Revised Edition: 1965 336 Pages.
Hardcover with dust jacket.
This is a historical treasure trove of information about the early history of recorded sound. This book covers the invention of the first recorded sound and the development of the cylinder and disc machines of Pathe, Berliner, Victor & Edison, starting from the late 19th century into the electrical LP/stereo era of the 1970's.
Gelatt traces the history of the phonograph starting with Thomas Edison's 1877 invention through all its various forms up to modern day analog stereo and recording devices. He also touches on the media that arose from the invention of the phonograph, from radio stars to rock and roll legends. Illustrations include two sections of photographs: one of early Americans benefiting from the new phonograph and the second, a compilation of musical artists during performances and recording sessions. Also included is a comprehensive timeline of events in the development of recorded sound from 1877 through 1964.
Condition: Original dust jacket is in very good condition. No tears but some wear shown on corners and edges as seen in photos. Book has been used but is in excellent condition with no marks or blemishes on any pages.
